The English suffix was contracted from the ending -ylene in acetylene, and was incorporated into the systematic series -ane, -ene and -yne for hydrocarbons with single, double and triple carbon–carbon bonds, respectively.\nCompare Danish -yn and Swedish -yn, as well as English -yne, French -yne, German -in and Finnish -yyni (“alkyne-name suffix”).",
